My name is Brianna, and I’m a 19-year-old journalism student and writer from Sydney. Before you ask I do know how to spell ‘may’; my middle name is Mae so I thought I’d be punny and slip it in my blog title.
I’ve loved writing my entire life. I remember lying on my
bedroom floor at the awkward age of 10, writing down every single lyric to
every single song on my So Fresh CD in a notebook. I just loved the look of pen on paper, and I
still do to this day. When laptops started becoming the norm in the classroom,
I stuck to my pen and paper, writing down endless amounts of useless notes for
the hell of it.
I knew I wanted to get into writing as a career when I was
about 15, after doing some work experience at Girlfriend Magazine. For a week I
sat at a desk and wrote story after story, living this make-believe life as a
magazine writer.
Fast-forward four years and I guess I could say I’m on the
right track to making this dream a reality. Since I left school, I started
interning at Her Fashion Box, a beauty & fashion subscription service, as
their Beauty Editorial Intern. After writing some small blogs for their website
for a few months, they asked whether I’d like to start writing their beauty
content for their magazine. I now contribute monthly as a Beauty Writer to Her
Fashion Magazine, coming up with 2-page spreads for all kinds of beauty
products (which I LOVE).
A few months ago I saw a tweet on Twitter about a
competition Cleo Magazine was running. You had to tell them in 100 words or
less why you want to be their travel reporter and the winner would be sent to
Santa Monica in California. It’s one of those things where you think there’s no
point entering – you’re never going to win. I wrote my 100-word piece, and
decided not to enter it. What’s the point?
I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so a few hours later I
wrote another entry and submitted it. In my daze of hypothetical thinking I
told my boyfriend Dylan that if I won I would take him, and went through all
the things we would do when we got there. He rolled his eyes, and that’s the
last we spoke of it. A couple of months later, I was sitting at work when I got
an email, telling me I had won the trip to Santa Monica. I immediately started
bawling my eyes out (I NEVER cry in front of people) and calling my entire
family. So, after that incredible opportunity I’ve written a travel feature
that will be published as a 2-page spread in a 2015 issue of Cleo.
I absolutely love writing lifestyle, health, opinion and
beauty pieces and I hope I get to make a career out of this passion I have. My
ultimate dream is print journalism – nothing beats holding a magazine and
seeing your writing in it. I’d also love to work in online journalism, as well
as TV broadcast (cheesy ultimate dream – to work with Karl & Lisa on the
Today Show).
I’m extremely ambitious, and know exactly where I want my
career to go. Wish me luck!
